Choosing a Website Framework for Your Project

A plain-language guide to choosing between Astro, Next.js, Svelte, and other tools based on what your website needs to do.

Start with what the site needs to do

A framework is a means to build a website, not the goal in itself. First think about the content, interactions, integrations, accessibility, performance expectations, and how the site will be updated. The answers help narrow down the tools.

When Astro may be a good fit

Astro is designed for content-focused websites and can render pages to static HTML. It can also use interactive components when a page needs them. A marketing site, publication, or straightforward business website may benefit from this content-first approach.

When Next.js may be a good fit

Next.js is a React framework with multiple rendering and routing options. It may be worth considering when a project needs React, server-rendered pages, or a more application-like experience. Those capabilities also bring decisions about hosting, data, and ongoing operation.

When Svelte may be a good fit

Svelte offers a component-based way to build interactive interfaces. SvelteKit extends it with routing and server-rendering options. It can suit projects where the interface and interactions are a central part of the experience.

Make the decision around the project

There is no single best framework for every website. Compare the actual requirements, who will maintain the site, how it should be hosted, and the trade-offs of each option. A small, content-led business site may need a different approach from a data-heavy web application.
